What is early intervention?

Early intervention, also called Phase 1 orthodontic treatment, is orthodontic care that begins while a child still has a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth — typically between ages 6 and 10. Rather than waiting for all adult teeth to erupt, early orthodontic treatment allows us to identify and address developing orthodontic concerns while the jaws and facial structures are still growing and most responsive to change.

Essex Orthodontics provides early orthodontic evaluations and interceptive treatment for children throughout Verona, Montclair, Livingston, Cedar Grove, Caldwell, and surrounding Essex County communities. Early treatment allows Dr. Elizabeth Clanaman to identify developing orthodontic concerns while children are still growing, helping guide jaw development, improve bite alignment, and create healthier long-term outcomes in a comfortable, supportive environment designed for families. While not every child requires Phase 1 treatment, early evaluation allows orthodontic concerns to be identified and monitored before they become more severe or difficult to correct later in life.

Early orthodontic treatment may be recommended to guide proper jaw growth and development, create space for erupting permanent teeth, and improve crowded or blocked-out teeth before they become more severe. Phase 1 treatment can also help correct crossbites, underbites, narrow dental arches, and excessive overjet (“buck teeth”), which may reduce the risk of dental trauma to protruding front teeth. In some children, early intervention improves bite function, chewing efficiency, facial symmetry, and overall smile development while also addressing oral habits such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting. Certain patients may additionally benefit from improvements related to speech, airway development, and oral function. By treating orthodontic concerns at the ideal stage of growth, early intervention may also help reduce the need for permanent tooth extractions or more complex orthodontic or surgical treatment later in life.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 — even if no treatment is needed right away.

What does treatment look like?

At Essex Orthodontics, we use advanced digital technology, including digital scanning with no messy impressions, to evaluate your child’s developing smile comfortably and accurately. Every treatment plan is highly personalized based on your child’s age, growth pattern, facial development, bite relationship, and long-term orthodontic needs.

Phase 1 orthodontic treatment may involve appliances such as expanders, partial braces, space maintainers, habit appliances, or limited clear aligner treatment depending on the specific goals of treatment. After early intervention is completed, many children enter a resting or observation phase while the remaining permanent teeth continue to erupt. A second phase of orthodontic treatment, if needed, is typically shorter and more efficient because important developmental concerns were addressed earlier.

Even when no obvious concerns are visible, early orthodontic screenings allow orthodontists to detect subtle growth and bite issues before they progress.

Dr. Elizabeth Clanaman provides personalized early orthodontic treatment for children in Verona, NJ and throughout Essex County, including Montclair, Livingston, West Orange, Cedar Grove, Caldwell, and surrounding New Jersey communities. Our goal is to create healthy, functional, confident smiles through thoughtful, conservative, and individualized orthodontic care.

What results can they expect?

With early orthodontic treatment, children can experience significant improvements in both smile development and overall oral function while they are still growing. By guiding jaw growth and facial development at the ideal stage, Phase 1 treatment can help create better balance between the upper and lower jaws, improve bite alignment, and support healthier eruption of the permanent teeth.

Many children also benefit from improved airway health, nasal breathing, chewing function, and speech development depending on their specific orthodontic needs. Addressing concerns such as narrow dental arches, crossbites, crowding, or protruding front teeth early may also reduce the risk of dental trauma and help prevent orthodontic problems from becoming more severe over time.

One of the greatest advantages of early orthodontic treatment is that it may reduce the need for more extensive orthodontic care later in life, including permanent tooth extractions or jaw surgery in certain cases. By creating a healthier foundation for future growth and development, early intervention often allows future orthodontic treatment to be shorter, simpler, and more efficient.

Most importantly, early orthodontic treatment helps children develop a healthy, confident smile that grows with them — improving not only aesthetics, but also long-term oral health, bite function, facial harmony, and self-confidence.

The earlier we look, the more we can do.
