Early intervention, also called Phase 1 treatment, is orthodontic care that begins while a child still has their baby teeth — typically between ages 6 and 10. Rather than waiting for all permanent teeth to come in, we address developing concerns early, when the jaw and facial structures are still growing and most responsive to treatment.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 — even if no treatment is needed right away.
At Essex Orthodontics, early intervention begins with a comprehensive digital evaluation — no goopy impressions, no guesswork. Dr. Clanaman takes the time to assess not just the teeth, but the jaw structure, airway development, and facial balance as a whole.Treatment at this stage may include palate expanders, limited braces, or simply careful monitoring over time. Every plan is different — because every child is different.
