Early Orthodontic Care: When Should a Child See an Orthodontist?

A healthy smile is one of the greatest gifts you can give your child — and the journey toward that smile often starts earlier than most parents expect. Knowing when to seek an orthodontic evaluation can make all the difference.

First Evaluation by Age 7

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children receive their first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. At this stage, a mix of baby and permanent teeth is present, giving orthodontists the clearest window into how your child's bite and jaw are developing.

Why Age 7 Matters

By age 7, enough permanent teeth have erupted for an orthodontist to evaluate the bite accurately and spot developing issues before they become complex problems. Early evaluation does not mean early treatment for every child — many simply benefit from a periodic watch plan — but it ensures that those who do need intervention receive it at the most effective time.

Early treatment, when warranted, can guide jaw growth, reduce the risk of trauma to protruding teeth, correct harmful oral habits, and even eliminate the need for tooth extraction later in life.

Signs to Watch For

As a parent, keep an eye out for these common indicators that an evaluation may be beneficial:

⚡ Crowded or overlapping teeth

↔ Noticeable gaps between teeth

↕ Jaw alignment or bite issues

👶 Prolonged thumb-sucking habits

🦷 Early or late loss of baby teeth

😬 Difficulty biting or chewing

Early Treatment Can Simplify the Future

Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that timing is everything in orthodontics. Addressing certain issues during a child's growth phase — when bones are still forming and adaptable — can guide development in ways that simply aren't possible once growth is complete.

Phase 1 treatment (typically between ages 7–10) might involve a palate expander or partial braces to correct a specific structural issue. When done well, it can reduce the complexity, duration, and cost of any Phase 2 treatment needed in the teenage years.

"Every child deserves a healthy smile — and early evaluation is the crucial first step toward achieving that goal."
